One of the few places where you can order beer and food while watching a movie.
Nick's Review:
Though the Alamo is located down in San Antonio, the Drafthouse is an Austin icon that doesn’t need to steal any thunder to establish its reputation. Born in streets of downtown, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has since stretched to a number of local theaters offering the latest in blockbuster entertainment while the original still caters to cult classics, special events, and short films.
What makes this theater standout compared to your average 25+ screen Cinemark or AMC is that they not only serve food, but beer as well! Take your average matinee theater before the age of stadium seating, replace every other row with a table, add menus and a wait staff constantly on the lookout for a fresh order, and you’ve got part of the Alamo experience.
Menu items are comparable to your average American-style restaurant, offering up hamburgers, salads, pizzas, appetizers and sandwiches. The wine and beer selection, both tap and bottled, rivals that of any well-equipped bar… but if you’re a part of the high school crowd, guess again – You need to be at least 18-years old to get in without a parent, even if the film isn’t rated-R.
The Alamo is definably Austin, and no matter how big the chain gets, it still maintains a unique feel showing old cartoons and commercials before a movie instead of the elevator music and unimaginative word jumbles of its big brother competitors. It turns movie-going into the experience it should be, and I recommend purchasing your tickets online during opening nights if you want to be a part of it.
